The leaves and flowering stems are anti-inflammatory,
antiseptic, aromatic, astringent, diaphoretic, diuretic, stomachic and tonic.

The flower head contains salicylic acid, from
which the drug aspirin can be synthesized.
Indications
·
Cramp in muscle of forearm on lifting anything.3
·
Veins in hands distended. 3
·
Heaviness in lower limbs as if full, esp. on
ascending steps. 3
·
In the flexor muscles of the forearm a feeling
as if cramp would come on; whenever he attempted to lift anything heavy, a real
cramp occured, that disappeared in the afternoon (eighth day).1
·
In the afternoon, heaviness in the lower
extremities, as if full, especially on ascending steps (eighth day). 1
·
In the afternoon great exhaustion, with
stretching of the limbs and yawning (seventh day). 1
·
Weak, prostrated, and weary with sleep; was
obliged to lie down after dinner and sleep for a few hours; after the sleep he
was somewhat refreshed (eighth day). 1

After the midday nap there was an indefinite
feeling of discomfort over the whole body, as after illness, or like a
foreboding of fever, a kind of unsteadiness while walking or moving about,
disappearing after moving about, towards evening (seventh day). 1

Spiraea and Gaultheria contain salicyl. acid. 7

Bojanus proved Spiraea ulmaria, taking
substantial doses. A leading symptom was the production of heat, general and
local.4
